Neck Pain Q & A

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain typically isn't a sign of a serious life-threatening condition, especially if it's not accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, shortness of breath, and sweating. Poor posture causes stress on a patient's neck, which leads to pain and stiffness. It may also lead to headaches. Working at a desk without changing positions and sleeping in a position that causes strain on the neck will lead to pain. Whiplash– a condition occurring when a sudden forced movement of the neck or head causes the muscles to tighten and contract- leads to neck pain. In more severe cases, muscles, joints, ligaments, and discs are affected. In rare instances, the neck pain is caused by a tumor, cancer, an infection, or an abscess.

How Does a Chiropractor Identify the Problem?

Dr. Kim will examine the patient after gathering a complete medical history on the patient. The chiropractor will identify the underlying cause of the pain and determine the best course of action.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Neck Pain?

This is dependent upon the cause of the patient's neck pain. If it's caused by a posture problem or any strain caused by spinal misalignment, the chiropractor may realign the spine through an adjustment. If tension caused the problem or headaches are occurring from the neck issue, the chiropractor may recommend that the patient undergoes massage therapy to loosen the muscles and relieve stress. Although a chiropractor can reduce pain in many neck conditions besides a fracture or break, the underlying cause still needs to be addressed by a specialist or medical doctor.

Will the Chiropractor Prescribe Any At-Home Treatments?

The chiropractor won't prescribe medications to relieve pain because his approach entails treating the root of the problem, not covering it up. He may recommend the patient take frequent breaks when having to sit at a desk all day. He may also recommend the patient change his or her sleep position. Hot and cold therapy may help as well.
